DigitaliseSME

The project DigitaliseSME (Digital Enablers in SMEs: Support for Digitalisation to Enhance SMEs’ Capacity to Go International and Innovate) wass an EU-funded project, running from june 2018 to February 2020, that supported the digital transformation of small and medium-sized companies as well as mid-caps in Europe. It connects companies to digital experts, referred to as “Digital Enablers”.

The initiative made the collaboration of SMEs with Digital Enablers possible and easy by having the latter visit for one month a company in another European country whose needs for digitalisation match their expertise. During this period, the Digital Enabler helped the company to set up and initiate a project that will lead to its digitalisation and respond to its necessities.

Partners from all over Europe joined and shared the vision of a program for the digitalisation of SMEs. The partners of DigitaliseSME are Digital Innovation Hubs in Germany (Mittelstand 4.0-Kompetenzzentrum Berlin), Romania (Iceberg – AltBrasov), Spain (FUNDECYT-PCTEX), the Netherlands (PhotonDelta) and Czech Republic (CzechInno), under the leadership of European Entrepreneurs CEA-PME.

DigitaliseSME was “Preparatory Action” that has been requested by the European Parliament – that means the results of the project could provide the basis to develop a broader EU program.

DigitaliseSME developed through two main phases:

– September 2018 – January 2019: A pilot phase of five months will allow to test the way in which companies and Digital Enablers can be matched in the most benefitting fashion for both parties

– March – November 2019: An execution phase that, based upon the findings of the pilot phase, will match Digital Enablers and companies on a larger base.

The project came to a close with the DigitaliseSME closing conference, titled “Digitalisation and Innovation for European SMEs – The project DigitaliseSME” that took place on February 18 in Brussels. The event aimed at contextualising the very positive results of the project in the broader framework of the next actions, legislative and programmatic, that the European Union can take to support the digitalisation of small and medium-sized companies.
